Do you want to build a playground in your backyard for your kids? It can be a great idea. Your kids will have fun and get out their energy, and you won’t even have to drive to a park. Just make sure to make safety a priority! There is a lot of information available on playground safety. Here are just a few reminders.

Properly anchor the equipment down to ensure there is never a tipping incident. Provide a soft landing on the ground. You can use rubber mats or a few inches of rubber mulch, sand, or wood chips. This can minimize injuries should a kid fall off a swing or the slide too hard. Be sure to cover pinch points and sharp edges on equipment. You don’t want any crushed fingers or cuts.

Be sure to regularly inspect the equipment. Look for any cracks, loose bolts, or any wear and deterioration. Make repairs as soon as possible.

Another thing to keep in mind is in the hot summer, check the slides and swings before the kids use them. Hot temperatures can heat them up and burn the skin, especially metal or plastic.
