Getting a new puppy is very exciting. But sometimes people forget to puppy-proof their home. Puppies like to get into everything and experience the world with their mouths, without much clue as to what can be harmful. So, it is your job to make sure they stay safe. Also, puppy-proofing can help you become less frustrated with them.
For starters, make sure that there are no small objects within their reach that could be choking hazards. They often love to bite on strings, so tie up any curtain cords out of their reach, and it could be a good idea to keep decorative tassels away from them, such as ones on pillows. Make sure they can’t bite on power cords. Store cleaning chemicals and food items safely away where they cannot be accessed by your puppy. This may mean putting child safety locks on some cabinets. Keep plants out of their reach as some may be poisonous to dogs.
Puppies will chew on almost anything. So, store away your favorite shoes and other things that you cannot bear to see teeth marks on. Also, make sure to have a good floor cleaner handy in case your puppy has any accidents.
