Our HVAC systems (particularly a forced air system) are one of the most important parts of our home. They keep us warm (or cool), they keep our air fresh and circulated, and in many ways (if done properly) keep our air relatively clean. But a forced air HVAC system requires maintenance. So what can we do as a homeowner to care for our forced air system? Here are a few things that we can do:
1: Change our air filters. This is one of the most important things we can do. Make sure the air filter is changed properly at regular intervals and is the correct size and type. Be sure to ask your HVAC technician if you should use 30-day. 90-day, 180-day, or other type of filter. Again, the type of filter you use determines how often you should change it.
2: Have your ductwork cleaned. This is something most people tend to neglect, but it is important to have your ductwork cleaned BEFORE they are dirty enough to start thinking about having them cleaned.
3: Schedule yearly maintenance. Just because your unit is running doesn’t mean it is not in need of maintenance. Have at least yearly inspections and maintenance by a qualified HVAC technician.
